Trabzonspor's Jerome Boateng Move: Great Career, Big Question Marks

It has been reported that Trabzonspor has reached a principle agreement with Jerome Boateng for Thomas Reis's coaching staff. According to reports, the former German defender is expected to come to Trabzon over the weekend to sign a contract.

However, reading this move solely as 'a world star is coming to the bench' would be an incomplete perspective. Boateng's playing career was undoubtedly top-notch; however, his coaching background is not equally strong.

Great playing history, limited coaching experience

Boateng won two Champions League titles and nine Bundesliga championships with Bayern Munich, and he lifted the World Cup with Germany in 2014. His experience as a defender is indisputable.

However, his coaching career is still in its infancy. Boateng's known experience on the sidelines is limited to his assistant coaching role at LASK Amateure OÖ in 2025. He has not served as an assistant coach in a top-level professional football team.

Boateng, who holds a UEFA B license, is working towards obtaining an A license. Therefore, the Trabzonspor possibility signifies the arrival of a former star still in the learning process, rather than a coach who has completed his career steps at lower levels, directly into the Super Lig bench.

Why was the planned internship at Bayern canceled?

Boateng's transition to coaching has been discussed not only due to a lack of on-field experience.

A planned short-term technical staff internship at Bayern Munich in 2025 did not materialize following fan backlash. According to Reuters, this backlash was rooted in a court ruling from 2024 regarding a deliberate injury case against Boateng's former partner. Boateng denied the allegations; however, the internship at Bayern was canceled.

This background necessitates looking at the issue for Trabzonspor not only in terms of technical qualifications but also regarding institutional reputation and fan sensitivities.

What is Reis's risk, and what is his gain?

It is likely that Thomas Reis specifically wanted Boateng for defensive organization and player development. A player who has won the World Cup and played at an elite level for years as a center-back has valuable insights to share with young defenders.

However, the name value in the coaching staff does not directly equate to coaching competence. The main risk Trabzonspor takes with this choice is opening the door early to someone with limited high-level coaching practice and who is not entirely independent of public discussions.
