Mert Günok Steps Up as Fenerbahçe Advance

Mert Günok was one of Fenerbahçe’s key performers as the Turkish side secured their place in the next round of UEFA Champions League qualifying with a 1-1 draw away to Gornik Zabrze.

Anderson Talisca gave Fenerbahçe the lead from the penalty spot in the 12th minute before Michal Sacek equalised deep into first-half stoppage time.

There were no further goals after the interval, allowing Fenerbahçe to protect the advantage they had built in the first leg.

Günok played an important role in ensuring Gornik never turned their pressure into a decisive swing in the tie.

First Big Save From Janza

One of Günok’s first important interventions came in the 29th minute.

Janza sent a dangerous free kick towards the corner, but the Fenerbahçe goalkeeper got across to keep it out.

Gornik increased the pressure towards the end of the first half and forced another major save in the 98th minute.

Ismaheel struck powerfully from the left side of the penalty area, only for Günok to deny him.

Sacek equalised shortly afterwards, but Günok’s two saves had already prevented the hosts from making more of their strongest period of the match.

Günok maintained his level after the break and finished the match with five saves.

The 36-year-old was particularly important during periods when Fenerbahçe conceded possession and allowed Gornik to push higher up the pitch.

His interventions helped the visitors protect their position in the tie and avoid a more difficult final phase.

Günok’s post-match assessment was notably critical despite qualification.

He admitted that Fenerbahçe had not produced the performance they wanted, particularly during the final 20 minutes of the first half and after the interval.

The goalkeeper highlighted simple turnovers and slow possession as two of the main problems, while also acknowledging that his team spent too much time without the ball.

He also pointed to the physical and mental demands surrounding the players’ return from international duty and the short break before joining camp.

For Günok, however, qualification was still the immediate priority.

His message afterwards was that Fenerbahçe must now improve their game before the next European test.

Prepared for Gornik’s Aerial Threat

Another part of Günok’s performance came in the way he dealt with deliveries into the penalty area.

The experienced goalkeeper explained that Fenerbahçe had expected Gornik to attack through crosses and had prepared specifically for that threat.

Günok said coming for high balls has always been part of his game and that he tried to attack every delivery he believed he could reach.

That preparation became important when Gornik began applying greater pressure around the Fenerbahçe box.

Günok also addressed his personal approach after the match.

The goalkeeper said he does not spend much time promoting his work publicly or through social media, preferring instead to remain prepared for whenever he is given an opportunity.
