Leon Goretzka Close to AC Milan Move as Bayern Munich Exit Nears
May 21, 2026
Leon Goretzka is reportedly closing in on a move to AC Milan after agreeing personal terms. The Bayern Munich midfielder could complete the transfer if Milan secure Champions League qualification.

Leon Goretzka’s time at Bayern Munich appears to be coming to an end, with AC Milan emerging as the clear favourites to sign the German midfielder this summer.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Goretzka recently held talks with new Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri and was fully convinced by the Italian manager’s vision for the club.
The report adds that Milan have offered the midfielder a three-year contract worth €5 million per season, plus performance-related bonuses.
Milan Pull Ahead of the Race
Milan are now believed to be leading the race despite competition from several major clubs.
Inter, Napoli and Juventus have all monitored the situation, while Atletico Madrid also attempted to sign the midfielder during the winter transfer window.
Italian reports suggest Goretzka and Milan have already been aligned on personal terms for weeks, with negotiations progressing since late April.
One Major Obstacle Remains
There is still one key condition before the move can be completed:
AC Milan must qualify for the Champions League.
The Rossoneri remain locked in a four-team battle with Roma, Como and Juventus for the remaining Champions League places.
Milan enter the final matchday level on 70 points with Roma, putting them in a strong position.
A result against Cagliari could not only secure Champions League football but also trigger the final steps of the Goretzka transfer.
End of an Era at Bayern
Goretzka’s departure has been expected for several months.
Back in January, Bayern reportedly decided not to offer the midfielder a new contract, ending an eight-year spell in Munich.
During his Bayern career, Goretzka won:
🏆 7 Bundesliga titles
🏆 UEFA Champions League
🏆 UEFA Super Cup
🏆 FIFA Club World Cup
He could still add another trophy to his collection in the upcoming DFB-Pokal final against Stuttgart.
Reduced Role Under Kompany
The midfielder’s role gradually diminished under Vincent Kompany.
Although injuries to Aleksandar Pavlovic and Joao Palhinha temporarily brought him back into the starting lineup, Goretzka eventually returned to the bench during the decisive phase of the season.
He remained unused in key Champions League knockout matches against Real Madrid and PSG, signalling the beginning of the end of his Bayern chapter.
World Cup Opportunity Ahead
Despite his reduced club role, Goretzka returned to the Germany national team setup.
With Joshua Kimmich expected to operate at right-back during the World Cup and only Pavlovic considered guaranteed in midfield, Goretzka could still play a major role for Germany.
He is expected to compete with Felix Nmecha for a starting place.
Transfers change more than squads. They reshape roles, profiles and team structure.
