Fenerbahçe Finish the Job in Poland

Fenerbahçe secured their place in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round after drawing 1-1 away to Gornik Zabrze.

Having arrived in Poland with an advantage from the first leg, Fenerbahçe strengthened their position when Anderson Talisca converted an early penalty.

The game did not remain comfortable, however.

Gornik increased the pressure towards the end of the first half and eventually equalised through Michal Sácek in the tenth minute of added time.

There were chances at both ends after the break, but no further goals followed and Fenerbahçe progressed to face Sturm Graz.

Early Goal Changed the Tie

An early goal can completely alter the dynamics of a qualifying second leg, particularly for the team already holding an advantage.

Fenerbahçe found exactly that in the 12th minute.

İrfan Can Kahveci’s corner resulted in Milan Skriniar going down under a challenge from Sadilek. Following a VAR intervention, the referee reviewed the incident and awarded a penalty.

Talisca converted to put Fenerbahçe 1-0 ahead.

That goal increased the pressure on Gornik, who now had to take more risks to keep the tie alive.

Set Pieces Created Problems for Gornik

Set pieces were a recurring source of danger for Fenerbahçe.

Mert Günok Delivered in Key Moments

Mert Günok played an important role in keeping Fenerbahçe in control of the tie during Gornik’s strongest spell.

He saved Janza’s free kick in the 29th minute and then denied Ismaheel deep into first-half stoppage time.

Those interventions prevented the home side from gaining momentum earlier.

Although Sácek eventually equalised, Mert’s saves helped Fenerbahçe avoid greater damage during a difficult period.

Fenerbahçe Still Created Chances After the Break

Fenerbahçe had opportunities to regain the lead in the second half.

In the 63rd minute, Kerem found Talisca around the penalty spot, but the Brazilian sent his effort wide.

Talisca threatened again from Greenwood’s corner in the 72nd minute, only for his header to miss the target.

A minute later, Fred’s backheel released İsmail Yüksek inside the box, but goalkeeper Schulze saved his placed effort.

The chances included in the match report show that Fenerbahçe did not simply retreat and defend the aggregate advantage after the interval.

Talisca at the Centre of the Attack

Talisca was involved in several of Fenerbahçe’s most dangerous attacking moments.

He converted the penalty, had a shooting opportunity from Kerem’s pass and later threatened from a corner.

His role combined penalty-area finishing with aerial threat from set pieces.

Skriniar also played an important attacking role from dead balls. His run earned the penalty for the opening goal, while he later came close with a header.

Experience Through the Middle

Fenerbahçe started with Guendouzi and Fred in central midfield, with Asensio, İrfan Can Kahveci and Kerem Aktürkoğlu operating ahead of them and Talisca leading the attack.

Semedo, Skriniar, Aké and Oosterwolde formed the defensive line in front of Mert Günok.

The selection provided experience and technical quality through the centre of the team.

One of Fenerbahçe’s clearest second-half chances also came through Fred’s backheel, which released İsmail Yüksek inside the penalty area.

The Score Was Under Control — the Game Was Not Always

A 1-1 draw was enough for Fenerbahçe, but the match itself was not entirely comfortable.

Gornik’s late first-half pressure forced two important saves from Mert Günok before finally producing Sácek’s equaliser.

Fenerbahçe responded by creating further opportunities after the interval, but there were periods in which the home side were allowed to build momentum despite the visitors holding the advantage in the tie.

In qualifying football, progression is ultimately the priority, and Fenerbahçe achieved that objective.

The events of the match, however, also highlighted areas to manage more effectively before the next round, particularly defensive control during periods of sustained pressure and the closing stages of halves.

Sturm Graz Await

Fenerbahçe will now face Austrian side Sturm Graz in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

The first legs are scheduled for August 4-5, with the return matches on August 11.

The main conclusion from Poland is straightforward: Fenerbahçe got the result they needed, continued to create chances after the break and received important contributions from Mert Günok at key moments.

The late pressure before half-time, however, provided the clearest warning ahead of the next European test.
