Beşiktaş 1-0 Midtjylland: Dominant But Wasteful

A Win Made Easier by a Red Card, But Still a Struggle

Beşiktaş beat Danish side Midtjylland 1-0 at Dolmabahçe in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League 2nd qualifying round tie. The only goal came in the 26th minute, scored by Orkun Kökçü off a Cerny assist. But the standout detail of the match was that Beşiktaş failed to extend their lead despite Midtjylland playing with 10 men from as early as the 15th minute, following Friday Ubi Etim's straight red card.

Dominant Numbers, Stingy Scoreline

The match stats clearly show Beşiktaş's control of the game: 75% possession, 28 shots to just 5, 7 shots on target to 1, and 88% pass accuracy compared to 62%. The gap in dangerous attacks was equally stark — 94 to 19. Yet the fact that all this dominance translated into just a single-goal margin points to a real finishing problem.

Beşiktaş also led in big chances, 4 to 1, but converted only one of them. Five big chances missed (compared to the opponent's one) is the clearest indicator that despite midfield dominance, the final touch was lacking.

Orkun Kökçü: The Standout on the Pitch

Orkun Kökçü was the match's leading figure, both through his goal and his overall contribution. With 6 key passes — far ahead of his opposite number Philip Billing's 1 — Orkun was also the team's most active attacking presence with 5 shots (2 on target). Salih Özcan's contribution in build-up play, with 85 accurate passes against Billing's 24, shouldn't go unnoticed either.

Beşiktaş Also Led in Defensive Duels

Beşiktaş stood out not just in attack but in duel statistics too — though they trailed in interceptions (5 to 16), that's a natural byproduct of holding much more possession. Midtjylland edged aerial duels (57%) — a notable stat given they played most of the match a man down.

Ahead of the Second Leg

Beşiktaş head into the second leg in Denmark on 30 July with a narrow but comfortable advantage. The fact that clear chances against a 10-man side didn't translate into more goals is an area head coach Vincenzo Italiano will need to address. A sharper finishing performance in the return leg would make progressing to the next round considerably more comfortable.
