Why Vitinha and João Neves Are PSG’s Midfield Engine

Luis Campos has described Vitinha as one of the world’s leading players and João Neves as a midfielder capable of becoming one of a team’s two or three most important figures.

The praise, made on the Portugal Football Summit Podcast, reflects PSG’s belief in a midfield partnership built on complementary qualities rather than identical roles.

Vitinha controls the tempo

Vitinha has started all seven of his Ligue 1 appearances this season, playing 609 minutes and recording a 7.83 average rating — placing him in the top 1% at his position.

Among Ligue 1 defensive midfielders, he ranks first for touches per 90 minutes (113.65) and accurate passes per 90 (95.47). His 93% pass completion rate is also among the league’s best.

Those figures explain his importance to PSG’s possession structure. Vitinha is not simply receiving the ball often; he is reliably moving it through the pitch while retaining control. He also contributes in the final third, ranking third among his positional peers for key passes (1.92), big chances created (0.59) and shots per 90 (1.92).

João Neves brings the defensive edge

João Neves has started each of his five league appearances, averaging a 7.11 rating.

His early-season profile is defined more clearly by defensive activity. Among Ligue 1 central midfielders, Neves ranks sixth for tackles per 90 (3.56), ninth for duels won (6.44) and fourth for aerial duels won (2.22).

He is also creating a presence around the opposition box. Neves ranks fourth for shots per 90 (2.22) and fifth for shots on target (0.89), despite not yet registering a goal or assist. His 1.19 xG suggests his attacking contribution has not yet been reflected on the scoresheet.

Vitinha gives PSG rhythm and volume in possession. João Neves adds aggression, recovery work and pressure around the ball. Campos’ assessment may be glowing, but the early numbers support the idea that PSG’s midfield is being shaped by two distinct — and increasingly important — profiles.
